Bethesda Lutheran Church (515) 232-6256, 1517 Northwestern Avenue.  Monday/Wednesday
9-11am and Tuesday/Thursday 1-3pm, also Tuesday evenings 6:30-8pm.  Can be visited once a month.  Photo ID required.  
Please enter the west entrance of the church.

Calvary United Methodist Church (515) 232-6329, 1403-24th Street.  Tuesday 2-3:30pm.  Can be visited once a month.  

First Evangelical Free Church (515) 232-2765, 2008-24th Street.  Tuesday 2-4pm and Thursday 9am-12 noon.  Must live in Ames
and provide photo ID with current address.  Can be visited every other month for 3 times total in 6 months, then once every 6
months.  Does not provide vouchers of any kind. Does not assist students.

30-6:15pm and Saturdays from 11:30am-12:15pm.

Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance (515) 296-1449, 508 Kellogg Ave.  Monday–Friday 9am-12 noon or call for an appointment.  
Food vouchers available for eggs, milk, cheese, and fresh produce.  

Seventh Day Adventist Church (515) 232-0472.  Call to schedule an appointment and address will be provided.  Proof of income
required.

The Help Center (515) 290-6881, 1627 S. High Ave. (Harvest Vineyard Church)  Wednesday 3-5pm and Friday 4-6pm.  Can visit 3
times in a 6-month period. Provides bread and other food items.

Meals on Wheels (515) 239-6730 or 1-800-239-6730  Prepares and delivers meals to the elderly and disabled.

Self-Help And Resource Exchange (SHARE) Provides monthly food packages valued at $30-$35 for discounted prices for Story
County Residents who volunteer 2 hours/ month in the community.  Can pay with cash or food stamps. Advance sign-up is
required for distribution later in the month at Heartland Senior Services.  For more information about SHARE or to find out about

EASTERN STORY COUNTY

30am-11:30am or call for an appointment.  Can visit once a month.  Only for Eastern Story County communities.

Nevada Community Cupboard (515) 382-4440, St. Patrick’s Church, 1110-11th Street.  Saturday 10-11:30am.  Can visit once a
month.  Only for Eastern Story County communities.  Call for an appointment if it is an emergency.

CAMBRIDGE
Cambridge Food Pantry (515) 383-4392, United Methodist Church, 215 -2nd Street.  Monday 3:30-6pm, Wednesday 1-6pm, Friday
5-8pm, and Saturday 1-5:30pm.  Available every 2 weeks to the Cambridge community only.  Enter through the church basement.
HUXLEY/KELLEY

a month.  Will deliver in an emergency situation. Huxley and Kelley communities only.

STORY CITY/ GILBERT/ ROLAND
Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (515) 733-4725, 610 Broad Street, Story City.  Saturday 10am-12 noon.  Can be visited once a
month for a total of 6 months.  Available only to Story City, Gilbert, and Roland communities.  Enter through the back of “The Way”
Bookstore.
ZEARING/ McCALLSBURG

Rent and Utility Assistance
Community Services (515) 382-7290, 126 South Kellogg, Suite 201 (Story County Human Services Building).  Monday–Friday 8am-
4:30pm.  Helps with current rent or utility bills when eligibility criteria are met.  Does not assist students.  

Emergency Residence Project (ERP) (515) 232-8075, 225 South Kellogg.  Helps with past due rent, deposits, and utilities when
funds are available.  

Evangelical Free Church (515) 232-2765, 2008 24th St. Rent and Utility Assistance, Thursdays 1-3. First come, first served.

City of Ames (515) 239-5400, 515 Clark Avenue, Room 214.  Provides a qualified renter with up to $1200 to assist with one of the
following: rental security deposit, first month’s rent, and/or utility deposits.   Also provides some assistance for transportation.  
Provides loans for minor home repairs and assistance for first time homebuyers.  Applications are available at City Hall or online
at http://www.city.ames.ia.us/housingweb/Default.htm

for assistance.  

Mid-Iowa Community Action (515) 956-3333 or 1-877-289-4668, 125 South 3rd St. Suite 100.  May be able to help with utilities in
danger of disconnection, depending on available funds.  Need disconnection notice and copy of most recent bill.  Also, must be
within income guidelines and provide proof of income for last 90 days.  November 1 – April 15: Non-Emergency Energy Assistance
- must bring a recent heat, electric, and local phone bill along with proof of income for all household members.  Call for an
appointment.

USDA Rural Development (515) 332-4411, 1301-6th Avenue North, Suite 1, Humboldt, IA.  8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday.  Provides
homeownership opportunities and rental assistance to rural low-income families in Story County, as well as programs for home
renovation and repair.

Commission of Veterans Affairs (515) 382-7290, 126 South Kellogg, Suite 201.  Provides assistance to eligible Story County
veterans and/or their family members who were discharged under Honorable Conditions.  

Telephone Assistance Program (Link-Up/Lifeline) Provides a credit on your phone bill each month or reduced connection charges
for first-time hook ups.  Come to MICA for an application.  To be eligible, applicants must participate in one of the following
programs: Medicaid, Free and Reduced Lunches, Food Stamps, Federal Housing Programs, FIP, SSI, or LIHEAP.

Marshall, Hardin, Hamilton, Greene, Franklin, and Boone counties.  HIV Case management support including referrals to doctors,
enrollment into prescription drug programs, information on testing sites, assistance with applying for Medicaid and Social Security
benefits, monthly support group etc.  Completely confidential.

Iowa State University Financial Counseling Clinic (515) 294-8644, 1331 Palmer HDFS Building.  Open 8am-5pm Monday-Friday
and evenings by appointment.  Free for ISU students; all others pay a fee on a sliding scale depending on income and family size.  
HUD-approved non-profit organization dedicated to improving the financial well-being of individuals through education and
counseling in the areas of homeownership, personal finance, and credit.  

Heartland Senior Services (515) 233-2906, 205 South Walnut Avenue.  Contact Carolyn Dixson.  The Bill Payer Representative
Payee Program is a free service designed by the AARP for those 60 and over, disabled, or having difficulty taking care of day-to-day
business affairs, such as paying bills, balancing finances, and monthly budgeting.  Qualifications: income must be less than
$19,000 a year, be a resident of Story County, and lack the support of family and friends.  

Lutheran Services in Iowa (515) 232-7262, 1323 Northwestern Avenue.  People Place is LSI’s family resource center that offers

Mainstream Living, Inc. (515) 232-8405, 2012 East 13th Street.  Provides meaningful opportunities for educational, social, and pre-
vocational training for persons with disabilities; Also offers supported community living and respite services.

Mid-Iowa Family Therapy (515) 239-9974, 1531 Airport Road, Suite 104. Provides Therapy to children age 5-18 and adults.  Also

                      Medical Resources                         

Free Medical Clinic  First United Methodist Church 515-233-5910, 508 Kellogg Avenue, right next to Rust Insurance Agency.  
Thursday 6-8pm.  Arrive by 5pm in order to put your name on the list.  This is a first come, first serve clinic.  No appointment
needed.  Basic health care to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families regardless of age, gender, race, religion,
sexual orientation, or ethnicity.  

Hawk-I Healthy Kids in Iowa  1-800-257-8563 (TDD 1-888-422-2319) No-cost or low-cost health care coverage for children under
19 years of age.  Application required.  Children must be uninsured, ineligible for Medicaid, Iowa residents, and United States
citizens or lawfully admitted resident aliens.  Family must also meet income guidelines.  Covers the following services: doctor
visits, in- and out-patient hospital care, prescription drugs, speech therapy, hearing services, chiropractic care, well-child visits,
vaccines/shots, emergencies, surgery, dental care, vision services, mental health, and substance abuse care.  www.hawk-i.org

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)  (515) 232-9020 or 1-800-890-8230, 126 South Kellogg, Suite 1.  Nutrition and food
supplemental program for expecting and nursing mothers and children under the age of 5.  WIC dietitians provide parents with
general health services and families can receive assistance in purchasing foods high in nutrition.  Nutrition classes held monthly.

families can apply for health insurance.  

Planned Parenthood  (515) 292-1000 or 1-877-811-7526, 2530 Chamberlain St.  Offers confidential reproductive health care
services on a sliding fee scale.  

Homeward  (515) 239-6730 or 1-800-529-4610, 1114 Duff Avenue.  Offers a sliding fee scale for many programs.  Homeward
accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans insurance.

DMACC  (515) 964-6280.  Offers dental services at reduced prices.  Provides cleanings, x-rays, and sealant services (no fillings).  
Reduced rates for Medicaid patients ($3 each for cleanings and sealants).  Call to make an appointment.

Story County Medical Center  (515) 382-2111, 630-6th Street, Nevada.  Free Care Program provides necessary medical care to
Story County residents who meet income eligibility guidelines and either do not have adequate insurance coverage available to
them or who are Medicare insured, but are unable to pay deductibles and co-payments.  Covers services at the Medical Center and
its clinics located in Maxwell, Nevada, and Zearing.  Program does not cover out-patient prescription medications, nor any of the
physician specialty services provided within the Medical Center or at other locations.  

Story County Community Dental Clinic: (515) 956-4595, 126 South Kellogg, (In the basement of the Human Services Building).   
Office hours: Mon. 9-6, Tue.-Thur. 8-4 and Fri. 8-3. Age 5 and older. Available to those with Medicaid and low income uninsured
families. This is not a free clinic. Uninsured families will pay discounted dental rates and those with Medicaid will pay a $3 co-pay.

For people that have no insurance or are underinsured.  Covers most medical procedures.

IowaCare provides hospital and physician services for people with limited income who are not eligible for Medicaid.  Contact Kristi

Preschools and Head Start Centers
Ames Community Preschool Center  (515) 233-2901, 611 Clark Avenue.  Children 19 months to 12 years, 7 locations, full/part-
time, sliding fee scale, offers full day care and before and after school care.

Willson Beardshear Preschool Programs (515) 239-3735, 920 Carroll Avenue.  Preschool programs for kids living in the Ames
School District.  Fully completed applications must have immunization records attached on an “immunization card”.  After being
accepted, proof of birth (original birth certificate) must be provided.  

All Day Programs (9am-2:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9am-1:30pm Wednesday)
•Early Success:  for kids 3 or 4 years old on or before September 15.
•Moving Four-Ward:  for kids 4 years old on or before September 15.
4 Success: for kids 4 years old on or before September 15.
•Special Needs

For Early Success and Moving Four-Ward classrooms, must have a letter of reference from a local agency stating why the child
should be accepted into the program (for example, concerns with socialization, behavior, motor skills, verbal skills, etc.).  Problems
with English as a Second Language are not considered.  Also for these two classrooms, must provide proof of income for the last
3 months OR last year’s tax return.

Half-day programs
•Rainbow, Great Expectations, Creative Beginnings: 8:35-11:15am Monday-Friday or 12:25-3:20pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
and Friday/12:25-2:05pm Wednesday for ages 3 and 4.
•Pre-Kindergarten: for 5 year olds, Morning (8:35-11:15) or Afternoon (12:25-3:20, Wednesday
dismiss at 2:05)

Head Start
Ames residents: Contact Drake University office at 233-4606 or 1-800-443-7253 x1854.  Located in Crawford School.  

Other Story County residents: Contact MICA at (515) 956-3333 or 1-877-289-4668.  Families must meet income guidelines and
children must be current on immunizations.  Proof of age is required (birth certificate or Title 19 card).  

•For Head Start children, must be 3 or 4 by September 15 (at the time class starts).  Contact 956-3333 with questions or to
schedule an appointment.

•For Early Head Start, children must be under age 3 by September 15th (at the time class starts).  Contact 956-3333 with questions
or to schedule an appointment.

                   Child Care Services

care assistance in Ames free of charge.  Provides services and training for child care providers, and helps to start up child care
services.
Childserve Community Options (515) 232-7220, 1915 Philadelphia Street.  Provides home care, therapy, adaptive equipment,
respite, supported community living, case management, and childcare in an inclusive setting for Ames area children.

A service that is available to FIP recipients and low-income men and women in Story County who have found employment or who
are actively seeking employment.  In order to receive work and interview clothing, you need to have a referral from ACCESS, Beyond
Welfare, DHS, Emergency Residence Project, Iowa Workforce Development Center, MICA, YSS, or WIC.  Suited for Work also
welcomes donations of business-appropriate, in season clothing and accessories. Please be sure that the clothing is in excellent
condition, clean and on hangers, with sizes clearly marked. Acceptable items include suits, dresses, blouses, shirts, skirts, slacks,
blazers, sweaters, new hosiery, all-weather coats, scarves, ties, handbags, briefcases, shoes, and jewelry.  Suited for Work is open
the following times:
